CBE Timeline

1979: Fifteen families became the founding members of Congregation Beth Emeth, "House of Truth." Their goals were to meet the spiritual needs of the Conservative Jewish community in Reston and surrounding areas, as well as offer high quality Jewish education for both children and adults.

Within three months additional families join totaling 40; Rabbi Kenneth Tarlow hired as a part-time rabbi and hosted the first High Holiday services; the group met at the Reston Community Center and other area locations for many years.

1983: Obtained membership in the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

1983: B'nai Shalom Congregation of Sterling merged with Congregation Beth Emeth.

1984: First confirmation class of three students graduates.

1988: Congregation moves to its own building on land acquired in 1985; Rabbi David Ebstein is hired as the first full-time rabbi.

1990: Opened the Beth Emeth Early Childhood Center for preschoolers.

1992: Established the scholars-in-residence program to allow members to participate in special programming for Torah scholarship.

1994: Linda Eisinger is hired as the first-ever administrator.

1995: Rabbi Steve Glazer becomes the next spiritual leader of Beth Emeth.

1997: Building is expanded, nearly tripling the size of the original space.

2002: Acquired adjacent property to be developed for future expansion.

2008: Congregation Beth Emeth website wins Gold Award from the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Seaboard Region.

2010: Congregation Beth Emeth wins USY Chapter of the Year Award, Seaboard Region.

2013: Rabbi Glazer retires, Rabbi Michelle (Mina) Goldsmith becomes the next spiritual leader of Beth Emeth.
